Lesson 1 - Greeting (Ahn yeoung haseyo )

The first thing that we have to learn when we start learning a new language is the way to greet someone. The reason being of course that the first thing that we usually say when we meet someone, is to say hello to them and the way to introduce ourselves.

1.1 Ahn yeoung haseyo

Conversation in Roman:
Kim: Ahnyeoung haseyo. Kim Min-Ok imnida.
Michael: Ahnyeoung haseyo. Michael Chun imnida.
Yi: Ahnyeoung haseyo. Yi Suchee imnida.
--------------------------------------------
Three people have met for the first time and they greeted each other. They said hello and they introduced themselves. Now the expression to use when me meet someone is:

- Ahn Yeoung haseyo
(Hello / Nice to meet you)

And to tell some one our name we add the expression ‘im-ni-da (입니다 )’ after our name to complete our sentence:

- (your name) + 입니다
- (your name) + im-ni-da
(my name is ____)

For example 'Joey imnida'

‘Ahn-yeoung ha-se-yo (안녕하세요.)’ is the expression to use when we meet someone for the first time. In English you would use a different expression for someone you just have met and for someone you already know. For instance there is a difference between ‘How do you do’ and ‘How are you’. In Korean we use the same expression for both people we already know and for people we meet for the first time.

Now let’s go to the second expression that we are going to learn this lesson.
When we want to tell someone our names, we use the expression that is our name followed by ‘im-mi-da (입니다 )’.

Try to practising these two expressions one by one.

Now every country has it own special way of greeting, which depends on the culture and customs of the people. Now in English when you say ‘hi’ or ‘hello’ you can wave you hands or when you are very close to that person you could give them a little kiss. But the way we greet someone in Korean is quite different; we bow and say ‘Ahn-yeoung ha-se-yo (안녕하세요.)’.

1.2 Hangul & Pronunciation – 한글과 발음 - ㅏ |- (a )
Just as the English has his alphabet in Korean we have the ‘Han-guls (한글 )’. Now there are ten basic vowels sounds and there are fourteen consonants sounds. In this lesson we are going to learn the vowel sound ‘a (ㅏ )’. Vowel. View and Print this to understand/see the vowel-sound a

ㅏ ( a) : the a sounds like in 'ah' or in 'law'.

We are now going to learn how to write the vowel a. Start from the top to down and from the middle of | to the right.

In Korean we need to put together consonants and vowels sounds to make a letter. The letter ‘a (ㅏ )’ is written on the right side of the consonants. Now let’s go over some words using this character.

# ah-gi (ah-gie) - baby
# na-mo (na-moe) - tree
# tha-ri (tha-ri) - bridge

On this lesson of Let’s speak Korean we learned two expressions. One was the expression we used to greet someone that is ‘Ahn-yeoung ha-se-yo (안녕하세요.)’ . And the other one was how to tell someone our name, that the expression was our name followed by ‘im-ni-da (입니다 )’.

Now the next time you meet a Korean you can greet her in Korean and tell them your name. Don’t forget to bow to them. That’s all for lesson 1 .
